I’m thrilled – and, truth be told, a bit nervous – to share some exciting news with you. Today marks the launch of a project that’s very close to my heart: the debut of my new podcast, “Women of Airbnb.”
Over the past few years, as an “Ask A Superhost” Ambassador, I’ve had the privilege of guiding more than 2,000 new hosts as they took their first steps on the Airbnb platform. During this journey, I’ve witnessed firsthand how Airbnb has the power to transform lives—especially the lives of women. Many of these women were at pivotal moments in their lives, whether they were navigating a divorce, adjusting to an empty nest, or simply seeking a fresh start. For some, it was their first time stepping out of the family home and into the workforce in decades. For others, it was the beginning of a new career, a chance to try something different, or an opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds.
What all these women had in common was a desire for more—more financial security, more personal freedom, and more options for their futures. By monetizing their primary asset—their home—these women found a way to achieve those goals. And with that newfound financial independence came something even more powerful: the freedom to make choices that align with their true selves.
What’s remarkable about hosting on Airbnb is that it doesn’t require a degree or prior credentials. All it takes is a space to share, a welcoming attitude, and a willingness to learn. That’s why I’ve chosen to name the podcast “Women of Airbnb” rather than “Women of STRs.” Airbnb stands out among hosting platforms for several reasons. It’s one of the few platforms that allows hosts to start by renting out rooms in their primary residence, thanks to its unique homesharing model—a feature that sets it apart from platforms like VRBO. Additionally, Airbnb offers an array of resources designed to support hosts, such as the “Ask a Superhost” program, which connects new hosts with experienced mentors; a comprehensive Resource Library; and local online Facebook host community groups that provide invaluable advice, recommendations, and referrals.
The mission of the “Women of Airbnb” podcast is to empower women by sharing their stories of transformation through hosting. Each episode will feature conversations with incredible women in the STR space, focusing on their unique Airbnb hosting journeys. We’ll delve into topics like building confidence, overcoming fears, and embracing the art of authentic hospitality. This podcast isn’t about offering hosting tips; it’s about the journey of getting from where you are to where you want to be, and navigating the obstacles that may arise along the way. Throughout history, humans have learned through stories—by identifying with the narrator and mentally walking through the experiences of others. My hope is that, by listening to these stories, more women will be inspired to start their own hosting journeys and find the empowerment that comes with it.
This first season focuses on women who live in Nashville. Many of the women I interviewed are involved in NASTRA. Some are friends; others I had recently met. All of them faced challenges, and learned how to overcome them.
I am purposely releasing the episodes in the order that I recorded them. The reason behind this? It’s pretty clear to me – and whomever listens – that I am nervous and unsure of myself in the first few podcasts. That’s how it is when you are learning to do something new. Skills require practice. And more practice. Since I am encouraging women to step out of their comfort zone to try something new, I wanted to show that in real time. I am doing something that, for me, is beyond my current competence level. By the end of this first season, I am much more relaxed, and the interviews flow much more smoothly.
Thank you for being part of this exciting new chapter. I can’t wait for you to hear the stories of these amazing women, and I hope you’ll find them as inspiring as I do.
